We are at week 14! The quesy-ness has mellowed a bit, but a little here and there. Dad's beard is definately taking off and Mom's belly is starting to stick out a bit. Not much else new to report...
This week's big developments: Baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck it's thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, facial muscles are getting a workout as the tiny features form one expression after another. The kidneys are producing urine, which Baby releases into the amniotic fluid. Baby can grasp, too! Baby is about the size of a lemon this week.
Baby's body is growing faster than it's head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, the arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of the body. (Baby's legs still have some lengthening to do.) Baby is starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over it's body. Baby's liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it's doing its job right — and it's spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though we can't feel Baby's tiny punches and kicks yet, our little one's hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active. We can't wait to start to feel Baby!
We had a great weekend down in Fillmore County. We spent most of the weekend in Harmony, visiting with family (that we don't get to see that often!) and celebrating birthdays! Enjoyed a terrific day of conoeing on Saturday. It was just fun to be on the river with friends and family (and it helps that we had perfect weather!) We spent Sunday in Preston catching up and having some good eats!
All in all it was a good weekend!

Progress Through the 1st Trimester

Week 13 - Beginning of 2nd TRIMESTER!!!
The middle of this week marks the end of 1st trimester and the beginning of 2ND TRIMESTER!!! We are so excited!
We had our 13 week check-up yesterday and everything looked really good. Dr. Marcus was very proud of Mommy with her progress!
New This Week: Fingerprints have formed on Baby's fingertips, the veins and organs are clearly visible through the still-thin skin, and Baby's body is starting to catch up with the head — which makes up just a third of the body size now. If we're having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a peach!) and weighs nearly an ounce. As we start our second trimester, most of Baby's critical development will be completed and the odds of miscarriage drop considerably. So all great news!
Abuelo, Grandma Mary, and Tio Cheech were here this past weekend; visiting from Texas. We had a great time with them! We even got a good start on Baby's room! After they all left, Frida just walked around the house, wondering where everyone had gone. Thanks again for a great weekend!
We also got spend a fun day with Grandma Bena yesterday. She was able to make it to our Dr's appointment and even got to hear Baby's heartbeat! We celebrated by doing a "little" shopping! Thanks again for a wonderful day!

Stay Tuned...
As some of you may know by now, we are recording the growth of Mom's tummy through this whole process as most people do. Every Monday we take a picture of Mom's tummy to record the growth... not to be out done... we also take a picture of Dad's face, which has not been shaved since the day we were told that we were going to be parents. Cool, I know!!
Anyway, at the end of the first trimester we will be uploading videos of the progress of both Mom and Dad, for better or worse... Stay tuned, this should be good!!

Week 12
Found out, through a process of elimination (pardon the pun!), that Baby doesn't like strawberries! Which is a total bummer for Mom, since they are everywhere and smell soooo good! Luckily, Dad was around to remove any stray strawberries in the fridge!
New this week: Reflexes! Baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, toes will curl, eye muscles will clench, and Baby's mouth will make sucking movements. I guess if Mom pokes her tummy, Baby will squirm in response, although Mom won't be able to feel it yet. Intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into the abdominal cavity about now, and Baby's kidneys will begin excreting urine into the bladder. Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and synapses are forming furiously. Baby's face looks unquestionably human: Eyes have moved from the sides to the front of the head, and the ears are right where they should be. Baby is now about the size of a plum!
We had a great weekend of relaxation. We did some wishful window shopping on Friday for Baby, got a lot of great ideas! Saturday, we (Frida included!) enjoyed the beautiful weather and walked around the Rose and Rock Gardens at Lake Harriet. Sunday, we enjoyed a wonderful BBQ with the Wand/Wuebker sides; it was really great to see everyone! All together it was a great weekend!

Week 11
We seem to be doing just fine this week. Celebrated the 4th on a very low-key note, but got to enjoy the fireworks! Mom is still a little nauseous at times and smells are still strong, but not as bad as before!
New this Week: Baby is about the size of a lime! And is now almost fully formed. The hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under the gums, and some of the bones are beginning to harden. Baby's already busy kicking and stretching, and the tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as Baby's body grows and becomes more developed and functional. Also new this week is Baby's ability to hiccup, since the diaphragm is forming! Still can't feel any of these movements but fun to know what's going on!

10 Week Ultrasound
Today we saw our little one in true form... kicking and moving!! We had our 10 week ultrasound today and got a very happy surprise, Baby was very active (going to be a drummer!!). I think we both teared up a little when we saw all the action!! Baby was moving and wiggling around so much it was hard to get a moment to see the heartbeat, but Baby wore out quickly and during a break in the action we were able to get a heartbeat of 166!! We are measuring a little ahead of schedule by about three days or so, maybe Baby will be the ultimate birthday present for Mom!! That would be OK by us, sharing a birthday with Mom is supposed to be good luck I think...New This Week: This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in the body rapidly grow and mature. Baby is swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm (we saw that!). Vital organs — including the kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function. Tiny nails are forming on the fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair is beginning to grow on tender skin. Baby's limbs can bend now. The hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over the heart, and the feet may be long enough to meet in front of the body. The spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from the spinal cord. Baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on the head, which measures half the length of Baby's body. From crown to rump, Baby is a little over 1.5 inches or about the size of a matchbox!
In other developments: Mom is still on a fruit kick! Not so much cereal anymore. Had a moment at Cub Foods and walked past the fried chicken and stuff and a corndog was calling out! Needless to say it didn't last long, don't think Baby liked it! So for now we will stick to very cold fruits and vegi's.
