The Big Announcement...

This is how we told the parents... ahem... Grandparents, the big news. They all got an envelope with this picture of us from our Alaska trip the week before. They had to read to the bottom and figure out what it meant. I must say, it didn't take any of them very long to put two and two together... Especially the ones that went right to the bottom first (you know who you are...) Inside was a second smaller envelope with a copy of the 6 week ultrasound, it was a very exciting and fun night to finally get to share the news with everyone.

Week 9
So we are at week 9!!! Not much new with us, Mom is just craving lots and lots of fruit! The cereal phase is dwindeling down, but we still keep it stocked! We went to the Mpls Farmer's Market this weekend and that was definately a test for the "super nose"! Unfortunately there wasn't much of an appeal for eats. But Dad had a roasted corn for us!
Baby is officially a fetus and is now about the size of a grape and weighs just a fraction of an ounce. Things are starting to look more and more human. The essential body parts are accounted for, though they'll go through plenty of fine-tuning in the coming months.
New this week: Baby's heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form — as do the tiny teeth. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. Baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. The eyes are fully formed, but the eyelids are fused shut and won't open until 27 weeks. There are tiny earlobes, and the mouth, nose, and nostrils are more distinct.
Some friends of ours have two kids and the topic of babies came up. Their mom explained to G, the older sister that some people wait and plan to have kids when it suits them better with their lifestyle (ie. done with school, settled in house, MARRIED, etc.). And the conversation came to an end and after a few minutes of silence, the little brother, J, said, " Wait a minute! You can plan for these things? I thought they just showed up!?" We just thought that was such an innocent thing to say! Gave us a good laugh!

8 Week Ultrasound
This is Baby at eight weeks and two days, our little astronaut!! At eight weeks Baby is the size of a kidney bean but looks like a gummy bear with tiny arm and leg "buds". The head is half the total size (must be a Wand!!). New this week: Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from Baby's hands and feet, eyelids practically cover the eyes, breathing tubes extend from the throat to the branches of the developing lungs, and the "tail" is just about gone. In the brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. Also at this stage eyes begin to form on the ends of stems that have grown from each side of the front part of the brain to the skin that will become the face. Baby can now percieve light!

7 Week Ultrasound

This is our 7 week ultrasound of our little one!! Baby is laying on its back with the head towards the right. Everything looks great and again we are right on pace!!
The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs — although they look more like paddles at this point than tiny, pudgy extremities. Baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry!

6 Week Ultrasound
Here is an image from our six week ultrasound. Inside the uterus (the dark area) is what looks like a diamond ring (fitting, I know...) and the baby is the "diamond". The ring part is the yolk sac that is feeding Baby. This was our first official look at Baby, so we were VERY excited to see a little person. Baby had a strong heartbeat of 150 bpm, very healthy and is growing right on schedule!!This week's major developments: The nose, mouth, and ears are beginning to take shape. Baby's eyes and nostrils are starting to form too. As well as emerging ears are marked by small depressions on the sides of the head, and arms and legs by protruding buds. Intestines are developing, and the bud of tissue that will give rise to lungs has appeared. The pituitary gland is forming, as are the rest of the brain, muscles, and bones. Right now, Baby is a quarter of an inch long, about the size of a pea!
